Inang ku poo!!

OVERLOADED

Overloading of vehicles (motorcycles, tricycles and buses in particular) is a very common sight on this island. The picture illustrates a particularly good example. In addition one can see that helmets are not being worn too - another common breach of the rules.
I am sure many of the readers of the CF have been guilty of one or both of these crimes, so widespread is the problem. Even policemen commonly do not wear helmets.
Why is it that the authorities responsible for road safety do not have a grip on the problem. If they are incapable of enforcing the simple things, how can we be confident in their ability to do the difficult things?
If you travel to Legazpi you see far mor motorcyclists wearing helmets.
Whatever the authorities are doing here it is not effective. That is clear for everyone to see.
Taking road safety seriously is important. The rules exist for our protection. The cost of a helmet is lower than the longer term cost of a family losing a bread-winner because of injury or even death.
Without strong leadership we are unlikely to see change and particularly so in an election year. Where must the pressure come from?

A few minutes after posting this comment I received a report of an incident* on the road at Calatagan. A motorcycle had collided with a tricycle. The road was wet and it was dark. According to the witness the rider was lying still on the road with blood on the head. I don't know if he was dead or alive. Clearly he had not been wearing a helmet and came off worse.
I wonder if the motorcycle he was riding was road worthy. Did the lights work, were the tyres legal and the steering and brakes up to scratch. Had he been drinking? Who knows. What we do know is that another life and another family will be sadly affected by this incident.

*NB: The use of the word 'accident' here would have implied that no one was to blame, hence the use of 'incident'.

Walang fasten your seatbelt at helmet at driving shoes.

Pwede man ako makabakar nin sadong auto yun nga lang auto-autohan sana.

Pag gusto maraming paraan. Pag ayaw marami dahilan..
