Black lung disease, also known as coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), is caused by long exposure to coal dust. It is a common affliction of coal miners and others who work with coal.
Inhaled coal dust progressively builds up in the lungs and is unable to be removed by the body; that leads to inflammation, fibrosis, and in the worst case, necrosis.
Coal workers' pneumoconiosis, in its most severe state, develops after the initial, milder form of the disease known as anthracosis (anthrac - coal, carbon). This is often asymptomatic and is found to at least some extent in all urban dwellers due to air pollution. Prolonged exposure to large amounts of carbon dust can result in more serious forms of the disease, simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis and complicated coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

I would like to thank KAWOR for having such wonderful presentation depicting CATANDUANES as one of the vital organs of our country the Philippines. I could not imagine that creative mind of Kawor could produce such artistic and realistic pictorial presentation or cartoon. Bravo! I fully remember Rizal in his novel NOLI ME TANGERE and EL FILIBUSTERISMO where Dr. Rizal positively identified and diagnosed our country's illness- CANCER. Cancer in our society. Now, that CANCER spread through out the LUNGS. If this will not be cured and STOP soon, our province will be put in danger. We are in the STATE OF BAD HEALTH!

Fellow Catandunganons, I am appealing you NOT to allow these irresponsible GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, POLITICIANS and BUSINESSMEN to gang rape our province- Catanduanes. Catanduanes as the vital organ in respiratory system, responsible for producing filtered air played vital role in our country's history and economic development. Let us make our province be the last haven for wildlife, fresh air and natural beauty. Let us not allow our beautiful and promising province be looted and squandered by these few people.

Sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas at maging sa mundo, hindi umunlad ang mga lugar na pinagminahan, maging ang mga mamamayan nito. Ang tanging maliwanag ay nasira ang kalikasan, nagkaroon ng matinding pagguho ng lupa at malawakang pagbaha. Higit sa lahat, maraming buhay ang nasawi at ang yumaman at nagkamal ng salapi lamang ay yaong mga negosyante at kasapakat nito.

Huwag nating hayaang matulad ang ating lalawigan sa Guinsaogon, Rizal at Quezon kung saan marami ang nasawi at nagbuwis ng buhay. Ating tandaan ang matandang kasabihang, "Nasa huli ang pagsisi."

A lifetime of breathing in large amounts of coal dust in relatively enclosed spaces puts coal miners at risk of developing respiratory diseases which can lead to serious disability. Coal dust can irritate the sensitive tissues of the lung and lead to the development of diseases such as pneumoconiosis, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
PNEUMOCONIOSIS.

The symptoms of pneumoconiosis include:

Shortness of breath
Chronic cough

Failure of the right side of the heart
Pulmonary tuberculosis

Who is at risk?

The risk of developing the disease is related to the duration and extent of exposure to the coal dust. most affected workers.
