On Filipino students getting a US green card

I have heard that being students in US universities will help you get a green card. Is that true? There’s news that some groups are lobbying for special green card categories for advanced students. Should I start looking at sample admission essay online to prepare for the needed for admission essays for US universities? They say that aside from marriage, the lottery and having a relative in the US, being a student is a way to get a green card. It is said that one has to graduate, get a job, and have your employer endorse your green card application. But doesn’t that take too long? Is this really a viable option?

Filipino students....

Hello Steven21, where did you hear about foreign students in US universities acquiring green card? I believe there's truth to this, but not until you graduate. What I can tell you for a fact is that any foreign students can work part time (up to 20 hrs/wk) if you wish to. When I went back to school at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, two of the International students I knew (from Japan) worked up to 20 hrs/wk while they were students. After graduation, one of them stayed in the US to work. I believe you can apply for a working visa after you graduate. Eventually, you can apply for a green card after you are here working for a while. I believe you have to be here for five yrs straight before you can apply for a green card. And it is true that your employer will help you get your green card especially, if you are a good employee and they really need you badly! Maybe you can ask the Philippines Embassy. I'm sure they will be able to answer any questions you may have.

If you have any questions about being a foreign students in the US, I might be able to answer some of your questions. You can send me a private message if you wish to. Good luck to you!
