13-day Manok-manok festival starts June 1

"Kuyas, Layug Bagamanoc!" becomes the battle cry in the northern town starting Monday, June 1, as it celebrates its Manok-manok Festival until the 13th, the feast day of its patron saint, St. Anthony of Padua.

Seemingly in tribute to the legendary predilection of roosters for chasing and conquering hens, festival organizers have scheduled a "fertility trip" to Ilihan to view up close the famous Boto ni Kurakog (Kurakog’s Penis) just a few minutes ride by boat from the poblacion. Daily trips are scheduled to the phallic symbol, a column of earth several meters high that is apparently all that remains of an island or promontory battered through the decades by storms, heavy rain and storm surges.
