CHURCH AND STATE

In recent times the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) has been placed on the back-foot over allegations of child abuse in several parts of the world. These cases have highlighted a problem that is not new and it would be extremely naive to suggest that this country does not have its own 'skeletons in the wardrobe'. Indeed I learned today from a former priest, that there is a parish in Cebu where priests of the church who have shall we say, a penchant for children are sent and are closely monitored. I would rather these men were not protected by the RCC and that if this is still the policy of Rome then it should change forthwith.
The RCC is revered and looked up to for moral guidance but does it deserve this lauded status? Respect and trust have to be earned. This can take a long time and can be broken in an instant. Regrettably I feel that the relationship with the people has become tarnished. Any organisation devised by man must by definition be flawed. The RCC is no exception. We cannot expect all our priests to be angels although we like to think some of them truly do hide wings under their robes. All men are fallible - we accept that. Therefore we should accept that oft times the RCC gets it wrong. In hindsight we know that.
So, I am quite content for the RCC to enjoy an advisory role in policy making along with other faiths that should also be represented. But I do not want the RCC to believe it has a God-given right to tell me what I should or should not do. God gave me free-will and I reserve this God-given right.

PHILIPPINES

When sexual scandals involving Catholic priests in the US came to light in 2002, the Philippines media began reporting on abuses by local priests. In July of that year, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines apologized for sexual misconduct committed by its priests over the last two decades and committed to drafting guidelines on how to deal with allegations of such offenses. According to Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference, about 200 of the country's 7,000 priests may have committed "sexual misconduct" – including child abuse, homosexuality and affairs – over the past two decades.
