Communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels in the Philippines have employed at least 340 "child warriors" since 1999, most of them aged 15 to 18, the military said on Sunday.

Of the number, 209 surrendered to the government, 119 were captured, while 12 were killed in combat, according to figures from the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Civil Relations Service (AFP-CRS).

The NPA rebels have been named as constant violators of child rights by the United Nations.[all caps]

A military official said NPA child warriors are often tasked to assassinate families of rebel returnees.

Catanduanes tightens grip on crab industry

Catanduanes, apart from being associated with typhoons, is known for its abundant crabs, particularly the superior quality king crabs.

Despite this, market supply remains scarce due to the massive trade of crablets to other provinces that prevents mass production.

MANILA, Philippines – Three people who claimed to be working for a local candidate were nabbed for alleged vote buying in Catanduanes province, Thursday afternoon.

The military named those arrested as Gretchen Liton, 24, Leslie Liton, 23, and Edgar Tanael, 40.

Major Harold Cabunoc, spokesman of the Philippines Army's 9th Infantry Division, said soldiers from the 83rd Infantry Battalion were on patrol when they chanced upon the suspects in Barangay Quezon, Viga town at 5 p.m. Thursday.
