His Eminence Jose Tomas Cardinal Sanchez born on March 17, 1920; is a Roman Catholic Archbishop and Cardinal Priest from the Philippines.

He was born in Pandan town in the island-province of Catanduanes and attended the seminary of the Holy Rosary in Naga City, where he obtained a doctorate in theology at the University of Santo Tomas of Manila.

He was ordained a priest on May 12, 1946.

As a priest, Cardinal Sanchez carried out an intense pastoral activity in Sorsogon and Legaspi City dioceseses in which for a period, was a vicar general. He also taught at the minor seminary of Sorsogon, Academy of St. Agnes, Superior School of Albay and at the Aquinas University in Legaspi City. He also taught at the major seminary of the Holy Rosary in Naga City.

On February 5, 1968, he was elected titular bishop of Lesvi and Auxilliary of Caceres. He recieved episcopal ordination on May 12, 1968.
On Dec. 12, 1972, he was named Coadjutor of the Bishop of Lucena whom he succeeded on Sept. 25, 1976.

From 1970, he was a member of the Administrative Council of the Conference of Bishop of the Philippines from 1976, President ot the Committee of the Apostolate of the Laity; from 1976-1980, Co president of the Church military commission and from 1981-1985, member of the permanent Commission of the Federation of the Asian Bishops Conferences.
In 1974, he was delegate of the Phil. at the III Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, didicated to evangelization.

On Jan.12, 1982 he became Archbishop of Nueva Sogvia and resigned on March 22 1986.
From Oct. 30 1985 until 1991 he was Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization in the Roman Curia.

As Secretary of the Congregation of the Evangelization of the Peoples, in the Encyclical Redemptoris mission he offered a comment especially in reference to the specific aspects inherent to the activity of his dicastery.

July 1991 he was named Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy until June 1996 and served from 1991-1993 as President of the Commission for Preservation of Artistic and Historic Patrimony of the Church.

Cardinal Sanchez was created and proclaimed a Cardinal - Deacon by John Paul II in the consistory of June 28 1991 of the the title of St. Pius V a Villa Carpegna ( deaconry raised pro hac vice to presbyterial tittle.)

I really would like to know more about him. I hope Dave can write about him here. Who knows, one day we might have a Pope in our midst. Catandunganons should be proud of him!

thanks again for sending me his pictures,the last time i saw him ,i was 8-9 yrs old,i can't even remember his face,in that time he was already a bishop..we were not allowed to see his face....he is a treasure of our country.....
