(Update 3) DLSU closed for 10 days due to A(H1N1) case
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 06/03/2009 4:58 PM
MANILA - The De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU-M) closed its Taft Ave. campus starting Wednesday (June 3) afternoon, due to a confirmed case of influenza A (H1N1) in their school. This is first case in the country of a school applying the DOH-mandated alert status for A (H1N1) cases.
Amid increasing unemployment, a 0.4% GDP growth in the first quarter, ah1n1 problems (DLSU Taft suspends classes for 10 days), Ebola reston virus in RP hogs, among other problems, our dear TONGRESSMEN went full speed ahead with this. If this is not the height of greed for power and money, i do not know what is.

Just want to let you know that JICA recently signed a grant to improve PAGASA equipment. I spoke with PAGASA Director Prisco D. Nilo and he said that the first recipient of the new equipment will be Catanduanes. Expect this project to start by December 2009.

Export earnings from abaca to go down by 20%
Written by Jennifer A. Ng / Reporter

EXPORT earnings from abaca fiber and abaca products are projected to decline by 20 percent to $80 million in 2009 due to slower demand caused by the global financial crisis.
The Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Fiber Industry Development Authority (Fida) noted that the recession in the United States has caused a slowdown in demand for abaca products.
Now, this is something we seldom see everyday. That's why when I saw this in my recent visit to Puerto Princesa in Palawan, I knew I had to take a picture...if only to convince myself that this is real and was not only a product of my imagination. People in Puerto Princesa are used to seeing this, how I envy them.
Before any of our local politicians relish the idea of running for office in May 2010 or any of our voters estimate how much politicians are going to spend on any of them in the coming polls, we should take a closer look at the real issues. One of these real issues is poverty. The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) recently released its small area estimate (SAE) for poverty in the Philippines. Though poverty in Catanduanes is not that high based on 2003 data, it is still struggling to address this issue.
After a year of food and oil crises and the onslaught of the financial and economic destruction brought about by the US financial meltdown, we are again facing a new year. Many economists and finance gurus say that 2009 will be the year that we feel the full brunt of the global economic slowdown.
hi everyone. im back in manila already and, as promised, im making another blog about what surfers need. read on...

Our conversation with Sagana Resort owner Gerry Degan enlightened us about the needs of surfers in siargao, which our puraran surfers may also need. Among the things he mentioned were surfer-friendly facilities and more information about resorts.
peeps, its official. i finally met the competition. i've been here in siargao island for more than a day now. this is just part of my 5-day trip to the CARAGA region which started in Butuan City last monday. as far as overall appeal (tourism, infra, etc) is concerned, i find siargao very similar to catanduanes. the only difference lies in the number of good...i mean REALLY good hotels and resorts here. im staying in Kalinaw hotel here in General Luna, Siargao island (the home of the Cloud 9 surfing site) and its a VERY well-designed hotel...very comfortable...simple elegance.
hi everyone. a friend of mine sent me this email. he quoted it from Ellen Tordesilla's website (www.ellentordesillas.com). its an eye opener. hopefully, if you know of anyone with cancer, you can recommend this to them. personally, im going to start this health regimen...an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure :)
(nb: i was told this can be taken with honey.)

Very interesting, Lemon Grass or we call it Tanglad, to fight cancer.
Please read and pass it around.
Dear Dr. Virola:
I must admit that I have been a fan of your column since I started covering the NEDA. It's your candidness and sincerity in every Statistically Speaking column that has made me want to read more of your writings. However, I would like to comment on your column published today about typhoons. I have never written an opinion letter before so please, bear with me.
i just read the online column of National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Executive Director Romulo Virola about typhoons. of course, he mentioned catanduanes. included in his statements he said these:
