MANNY VILLAR HAD SOME INTERESTING things to say last week at the Manila Overseas Press Club. “I’m not perfect. But when you look at me, you are looking at Manny Villar, what you see is what you get. You’re not looking at my mother, my father or the tycoon behind me.”

That

’s an obvious dig at Noynoy Aquino and Chiz Escudero. Well, Chiz has solved that problem not just by quitting the race but by cutting ties with “the tycoon behind me.” While at that, Chiz had a few choice words of his own in announcing his decision. He is not an hacendero, he is not an heredero, and he is not a bilyonaryo, he said. It’s an obvious dig too at Noynoy (hacendero and heredero), Villar (hacendero and bilyonaryo) and possibly Gilbert Teodoro with the suggestion of the billions in taxpayers’ money behind him.

What can one say? All’s fair in love and elections. Does Noynoy have to solve the problem of “you’re looking at my mother and father” too?

Not at all. In his case it’s not a loss, it’s a gain.

Villar misses the point. Not least in his choice of words which are quite unfortunate. “What you see is what you get” is usually not used as a pat on the back but as a putdown. It implies people who lack depth. When you say about a quiet person, “what you see is what you get,” you mean that he is quiet because he has nothing to say. When you say about a showbiz guy, “what you see is what you get,” you mean that he is handsome but shallow. That has no small amount of repercussion for a campaign trying to project the image of being pogi.

Quite apart from that, Villar misses the point when he rubs family in the face of Noynoy Aquino. The sensation is not unlike throwing a turtle into the sea to drown it, as the folk tale about the feuding turtle and monkey tells.

For good and bad, Filipinos have a tendency to look at family when making choices. That is the first thing parents ask their kids when they are about to propose (mamamanhikan). Does the partner have a history of having a crackpot in the family? May sira ba sa lahi nila? The worry being that, if there is, you have a good chance of producing offspring with some mental infirmity. Like I said, that is good and bad, the bad being that Filipinos, like Greeks, to go by “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” end up marrying families instead of individuals. But that is the culture.

What’s true for choosing spouses is true for choosing presidents. Or truer, the bad being less manifest there. You can’t go very wrong asking yourself what the antecedents of the candidates are. Whether being loony is hereditary or not is debatable, but whether being crooked is imbibed or not is not. People do share values within a family, making allowances for differences in personalities and capacities for rebellion. I doubt many people would look kindly on Erap’s kids today. I doubt many people would look kindly at Gloria’s—and Mike’s—kids after she’s gone. Or never mind after she’s gone, at this very moment. The sins of the fathers—and mothers—are visited upon the children.

So is the opposite: The graces of the fathers—and mothers—are visited upon the children. Noynoy is not made bereft in the eyes of the voters by having his immediate forebears dredged up by his opponents, he is made full by it. The first thing you think of when Cory and Ninoy are mentioned is that Noynoy cannot afford to tarnish their names by going wayward. The second thing you think of is that he cannot afford not to try to be as good as, if not better than, them. Either way, it cannot hurt his capacity to govern, or the public’s perception of it, that he falls under that shadow. It is not a burden, it is a gift.

Even more, Villar misses the point about the mood of the citizenry, or what matters most to voters today.

With him, he says, what you see is what you get. Unfortunately, what the public sees in him, more than anything else, is Ping Lacson’s C-5 exposé. The Senate hearings never proved wrongdoing, of course, but it cannot help his cause that he was championed there by Juan Ponce Enrile, Miriam Santiago, and Joker Arroyo, the same people who insisted Jun Lozada was never kidnapped. I did say then that his image of being neutral, or indeed of being acceptable to administration and opposition alike, had just been shattered. The defense of the Three Stooges drew him to GMA’s camp. With all its suggestion that birds of a feather flock together, or a family that preys together stays together.

True enough, Noynoy has never been in the spotlight. But he has never been in the spotlight for being accused of, or caught, stealing. He has never been in the spotlight for being accused of, or caught, saying one thing and doing another. He has never been in the spotlight for calling up a Comelec commissioner or having lugaw with the Comelec chief, and materializing as winner.

He has never been in the spotlight for spending a million bucks on a meal while his countrymen groan from the effects of disaster. He has never been in the spotlight for interrupting Manny Pacquiao’s training to have a photo-op with him or barging into his sister’s talk show to score pogi points. He has never been in the spotlight even when everyone was egging him to run and he wanted only to withdraw, or retreat, into the quiet of the wilds or his conscience. He has never been in the spotlight for abusing power. He has never been in the spotlight for never wanting the spotlight to leave him.

The point is simply this: What the voters today want—which has given rocket fuel to Noynoy’s bid even before he bid—is someone they can trust. Under GMA’s shadow, that trust is no longer earned by what public officials do but what they do not. What you see is what you get?

What you do not see is what you want to get.

si villar si noynoy

si villar - pinakamayaman na kandidato.

si noynoy - parihu kang ina' nya. gwa daang pusu' peru
daing pursiging makusug..

kaipuhan sa presidente, mapursigi buda piel.

"please read between the lines.."

'balus tabi'.

the problem with noynoy is..

noynoy had never been in the spotlight doing great things either as would bolster his image as someone who would deliver what the Philippines really needs right here and now. pure virtue and good intentions are not what qualifies a leader to so great a position let alone would give him the mandate to govern and fix the mess this current administration has done (now that prices of commodities in the country start to go crazy).

i too will not vouch for villar (c5 anomalies), and so for gibo teodoro (with him carrying the vestiges of this so foul a regime). i'd rather go for GORDON. at least he performs and does his work with efficiency! (think of sbma; laws passed by him)

genes, though potent, are not the measure of a leader.

i beg to differ

accomplishmentwise, noynoy has yet to prove his competence. he's just not ripe/seasoned to fulfill the task of Chief Executive. chances are, and this is very apparent, he will turn to his party for "support and advise" not realizing in the long run that he is the one being dictated to do things as these advisers please. coup attempts will once again rattle the seat of government causing devastation economically and politically in the country. If mass migration is the trend of today, which our columnists term as brain drain, brain hemmorrhage is not so distant a possibility.

when can we learn from history?

(during the days of her mom, the only good thing we can ascribe her government is the preservation of our democracy, to which we are very grateful. to me, that's what the filipinos were clamoring for after the dictatorial regime of marcos. However, the fact of the matter is, the ones really running the administration are no other than her advisers and secretaries. instead of her making orders, she was the one ordered to make them. it was even said that during her term, marcoses -read: corrupt officials- multiplied exponentially in the national and local setting. she was incompetent to provide the leadership the Philippines badly needed during those times of chaos.)

As for ZTE investigation which Gordon handled as chairman, well the Senate is an investigative body making an inquiry in aid of legislation. an investigative body can only recommend prosecution based on the evidence presented. the Court has the ultimate say on the matter. being investigated doesn't mean being adjudged guilty of wrongdoing. gloria and her minions had their share of cases wating for them. Lozada may not be guilty (as i believe and as public opinion shows). but we are not the ones to say that with finality. things need to be scrutinized.

in any case, i am not saying that Gordon is all blameless, guiltless, flawless. but with the roster of aspirants to the presidency that we have now, i think he is the closest to my standards.

competent, corrupt
competent, not corrupt
not competent, corrupt
not competent, not corrupt

TAKE YOUR PICK.

Again, history

AND there is not the slightest of possibility that corruption will again resurface on Philippine politics, ever, should noynoy become the President.

on the issue of corruption, noynoy, though he may not be corrupt himself (apparently) and though he may be the most virtuous of the aspirants, these are not the best of indicators that the government will be free from corruption once he took over. the government of the philippines is composed of three main branches. the president heads only the executive branch. he does not control the other two. also, although he has the power over the executive branch, it takes political will to weed out the corrupt officials from this branch, especially when they are your "advisers and secretaries". And we're only talking here of Malacanang. how about instrumentalities of the government and government owned corporation? HOw about our local government units?? LGU'S are not the under control of the President.

our history shows that even the government of mrs aquino is corruption-filled too. she may not be the one perpetrating it but her relatives (cujuangcos et al.) and other government officials, including her closest of "advisers and secretaries" are the ones doing it. instead of firing them for their misdeeds, she does not have the liberty to do so as they are the ones running the day to day affairs of her administration, her role largely said to be ceremonial. and this is so because she is a compromise alternative against Marcos. her inexperience though in running the government led the philippines nowhere, economically and politically.

i do not want to be adversarial. i admire noynoy for his being non-corrupt (at least for now) as much as i admire gibo teodoro for his intelligence and solid and feasible platform (i recently attended a forum, with him as guest). but then, as i keep repeating, he is not ready, just yet, to fill in the shoes of the Chief executive. he needs experience, he needs time. his family speaks so much of him. he has a hero for a father and an icon of democracy for a mother. he'd been a congressman, yes and a senator too. but then, he proved too little. besides, making a law is way different from executing it. Noy is a good choice. but then, it's just not the right time. i'm sure, there still is a better choice.

Nosebleed…hehehe

Nosebleed…hehehe

honest and integrity and clean ay bakong best indicators na magiging free sa corruption ang pilipinas. Pero mahahari pag-igwang political will sabi mo ngani. maski ngani siguro after 20 years dae magiging free ang pinas sa corruption. pustahan..
Pero si noynoy dae daw ning political will???

anu sa hiling mo...???

Supporting RH Bill contrary to the powerful CBCP. Hindi ba political will???

Supporting impeachment complaint and lost the majority leader position is not a political will???

Holding a 4 % stake of hacienda luisita 4 the good of the farmers kahit na lagging nag-iingay sina satur et al. It is not a political will??? (sinabi kong 4 the good of the farmers kasi my malaking pagkaka-utang ang hacienda at kung itatransfer ang lupa sa farmers it will not benefit the farmers instead maslalong pang mahihirapan. Di ba???) it is not a political will???

It is political will.

So Gordon has political will for his being ala marcos dictator sa olongapo na parang si Fernando na pinalayas nya ung mga ventor hindi man lang nirelokate basta sinipa lang tapos na. It is political will!!!????

Gibo has political will for being ala Rambo sa pagsugod sa maguindanao sa kasagsagan ng ampatuan massacre. Risking his life to make pogi points sa media. It is political will???

Villar has political will for showering the “pangakong yayaman campaign” ang mahirap. It is political will siguro..

Oh erap has political will also in proposing illegal jueting be legalized???

So I will vote Gordon for his being ala dictator malay mo itake over nya ang judiciary en legislative para maging FREE sa corruption. TOTALLY FREE OF CORRUPTION!!! So it means he will become kagawad, mayor, govervor, congressman, senator at the same time president. Wow!!! From 3rd world country na pinas mauunahan na ang US in just 6 years for his one only political will ala dictator. Pero parang too much political will na an.hehehe. and baging mapagahlh. Di kaya mangayayat sya kaan sa 100 days nya palang??? hehehe

LGU is not part of executive branch??? Sain sa judiciary??? Sa legislative??? Or it is just like CHR an independent body???.and wehere is the DILG and who under’s the DILG???? C’mon dude.hehehe

Seriously..

Noynoy can be a good leader. He has common sense. He has moral principles. He has religious values. It is not only political will. It is not only track record. It is not only karesma. It is not only intelligent. It is not only the billion pesos. But it is only common sense that matters. And if we combine those three things (common sense base on moral principles, moral principles base on religious value) yan ang sa hiling ko ang magayon na indicators that person can properly govern the people. Aye agree that he is not perfect but through the support of the majority of the people. And through the support of every individual na gahanap ning pagbabago I know he is competent to lead the pilipino people for change.

I know that “WE” not “HE” can make a difference!
I know that “WE” not “HE” can make for change!

So suportahan tana sana kung sisay man ang mang-gana maski halos trapo gabos (but except noy ha) sinda.hehehe

can't help

i cant help but comment. hehe

first off, lest i be adjudged ignorant and thus, talks non-sense, local government units are separate and distinct entities from the national government. the constitution provides a separate article for it (art. X to be exact.) It provides, inter alia, for the autonomy of LGUs. the president of the philippines through the DILG exercises the power of general supervision over them, not control. the president cannot remove loc. gov. officials from their posts. only the courts can (COMELEC at times) as per Local Government Code of 1991. the president's job is only to see to it that their (officials') jobs are faithfully done, in accordance with the law. we see the interplay here of the three major branches of government with respect to LGUs; the executive ensuring the faithful execution of the laws, the legislative making them and the judiciary interpreting them.

now, as regards hacienda luisita issue, it could have been helpful for noy if he was able to express his view of alleviating the plight of their farmers way before he was "prompted" to run for the presidency. of course, he cannot do it just yet with his defense that the hacienda is owned by a corporation - although his family is the majority stock holder (i didn't even mention this in my previous comments.)

if noy is all virtuous and religious, it'll do him good if he'll just enter priesthood. who knows, it might earn him the papacy.

as to all the other defenses in noy's favor, all in the "opposition" do that.

lastly, i already made my stand and cleared my point. i am not going to state them any longer. I also will not defend GORDON et al. i'm not paid to do that. hehe

just a note. political will is not and never will be synonymous with dictatorship. there is no absolute control in political will. it means optimizing the use of the power granted to achieve a desired political end in a legal manner for the common welfare.

but of course, i will support whoever will be the president of our country to the extent that he's doing it for the benefit of the people, of commoners like us. if noy wins, as survey indicates, so be it. but if his incompetence (on the assumption that he is incompetent) brings this country down and make matters worse (we're now in quagmire) due to mismanagement, its a different story.

it's not only political will indeed. but this would play a vital role in the execution of laws, as chief executives are mandated to do. this is the backbone of an efficient leader, a must have for anyone who attempts to wield the power of the sword.

for now, i just hope and pray that should noy become the president, he will have the strength to muster this will, against all odds. quoting erap's famous inauguration address, he must have the courage to say and do "WALANG KAI KAIBIGAN, WALANG KAMA KAMAG ANAK!"(unfortunately, erap failed us on this.)

u know i luv phil!!! hehehe

Now im supporting noynoy ga-asa na sana mabayadan nya after election. Siguro after may election pag Nangana sya tapos naging maski 40% satisfactory rating ang admin nya. Additional employment And additional classrooms and hospitals siguro ma tahlham ko na bayad-na-bayad na ako ah.hehehe

Anyway tenx sa lecture..

Mabalos..
