INTERNET CONNECTION SPEED

Sweet Bikolana's picture

I periodically check my connection speed using www.speedtest.net. Here is my latest result. SmartBro should be ashamed, very ashamed.

How do other C F member's connections compare on Catanduanes and around the globe?

smartbro sa bagamanoc

hay, inda pasensyahan talaga internet nin smartbro dito sa bagamanoc. bagal talaga pero madyag na kesa mai.

mabagal talaga

Sa Internet Cafe(Virac), it took me an hour para ma check ang e-mails, another thirty minutes to send the same. Pero mabilis pa siempre sa telegrama.

hi SB...

i work for a company named NETGEAR which manages in handling internet an wi-fi connections. speedstest.net is not really a hundred percent accurate. But i agree that internet connection speed in the philippines like Smart Bro and GlobeLines are not really fast compared to those connections in the US and UK. I believe they just don't have the technology yet. They only use DSL or broadband connections which are fair enough to let us use some of the good services we need on the internet. In the US and UK, people use CABLE and Fiber optic or T1 connections which are extremely fast. Sad to say those kinds of technology are still not used or developed in our country. Well maybe not yet, but someday.

NB
Thank you for the technical input.
As a simple user I am presently frustrated by the speed (which is more akin to dial-up) which is slow to the point of being virtually unusable at the moment.

If the WAN (wide area network) is slow, wala tayong magagawa dyan... Problema na yan ng smart. Kung sa US yan, mauubusan sila ng subcriber.

slow connection

We still dont have the technology for faster internet connection.I've worked for AT&T hi speed internet services before and some client even complained about their speed of 130mbps. Back home I know it is really slow to the point that it might put you to sleep before you can connect to a traffic prone website.

INTERNET CONNECTION SPEED

I performed another test this morning and got :
Download 0.2Mbps
Upload 0.01Mbps
Speedtest.net may not be accurate, but these figures seem to reflect the recent poor performance. I am not demanding. I don't need superfast speeds, but I am not getting what I pay for.
A neighbourhood internet cafe has recently moved from Smart to Globe. I am thinking very seriously about doing the same. Living on an island is nice, but its important for me to be able to communicate with the outside world.

I think the only way to get a better internet connection in Catanduanes is to set up your own sattelite dish that would pick up EDGE signal from smart or globe network. That would cost you some money though. If your mobile phone is also registered to receive data services from your provider then you can also use it as a modem for your laptop. Here in my location, the company provides internet connection in office premises only.In my room I am currently using a laptop connected to a cellphone that serves as a modem that gives out an EDGE signal which would enable you to connect to the internet. It is not fast but it is stable.Im only getting 460kpbs download and 230kpbs upload but I cant complain,it is better than what you are actually getting and mine only costs 10usd per month.

I Agree

we also have an issue on our cellphones here in manila, the signal drops out specially on 3g. Smart's service is very poor right at this moment. I have tried calling smart's customer service. But the line is busy or it shows up an error in connection. Sana may gawin na silang aksyon about it.
