“Arroyo does more harm than help after Ondoy” – NAFCON
September 26 marked the start of another trying period for the Philippine nation as Typhoon Ondoy (international name, Ketsena) left the central part of the country in wreckage. Not only was it one of the most unforgettable disasters causing damage for and killing hundreds of people, it also showed the true bayanihan spirit among Filipinos. In the midst of tragedy, this spirit manifested not only locally, but internationally.
The National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), a member organization of MIGRANTE International and a nationwide alliance of Filipino-American organizations committed to protect, advance, and uphold Filipino’s rights in the US, recognized the need to respond quickly, in order to address the concerns of compatriots whose families back home were affected directly by the typhoon. NAFCON immediately launched the Bayanihan Typhoon Ondoy Disaster Relief campaign.
On the other hand, the Philippine Government’s corruption was once again revealed in the lack of attention given to major facilities and services intended to deliver quick responses to national calamities. The P800-million contingency fund for emergencies, which could have been used to prepare the nation for Ondoy’s wrath, was reportedly spent for Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s foreign trips, luxurious dinners and expensive houses built outside the country.
With the Arroyo administration’s comprehensive track record on corruption, Filipinos in the US cannot be blamed if efforts by the Philippine government are seen as insincere. The recent directives set by Arroyo regarding relief efforts impose more red tape by having the need for donations to be approved first by certain government departments.
Taxing on donations that do not go through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is only a manifestation of further exploitation of Filipinos overseas by the Philippine government, which takes pride in its “Bagong Bayani” (New Hero), but is actually doing otherwise. This move can only lead to our Kababayans getting discouraged in sending much needed help to the motherland, whose only concern is to extend aid to their own families and to other distressed fellow Filipinos during these trying times.
These steps being taken by Arroyo to control the outpour of support to the Philippines is a display of arrogance, making her administration look good and undermining efforts of people’s organizations whose relief efforts are made possible even without help from her government.
In absence of the services Arroyo’s administration has failed to provide in preparation for and in response to typhoon Ondoy (and all other typhoons to come), it has resorted to the implementation of these directives to leave an impression that it has done a lot in uplifting the nation after the tragedy. NAFCON sees it otherwise and believes it to be a cover-up of what Arroyo could not accept: that her government cannot do the rebuilding of the nation alone and that the Filipino people, through collective action, can rise up with help from families, friends and allies abroad.

Yes, indeed the enemy, insofar as environmental degradation and climate change are concerned, is us. We are, all of us, to blame.
The enemies are the government officials who, despite the regularity with which disasters such as typhoons, floods and landslides visit our country, have failed all these years to put in place a comprehensive disaster preparedness program.
The enemies are loggers that have been denuding the forests, sharply constricting the “lungs” of the nation and destroying watersheds that absorb rainwater during the rainy season and help prevent the flooding of the lowlands.
The enemies are uncaring people who pollute and throw non-biodegradable things like plastic bags into lakes, rivers, canals and esteros, and clog them up and prevent them from draining rainwater out into the sea.
The enemies are government officials and housing developers who set up subdivisions and housing projects in the natural “flood plains” for rainwater, making them very vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season.
We could go on and on, and perhaps make a list of 100 or 1,000 things that people do to degrade the environment. They forget that Nature is also governed by the physical law of action and reaction and the ethical law of karma. They should realize that in harming the Earth, they are also harming themselves, and worse, killing themselves.

Rest assured, I dont take these discussions and debate on a personal level. Maski ninyon pa man, na agihan ko na mga maiinit na debate sa Catanduanes web sites, pero I harbor no hatred nor ill feelings to my fellow debaters.
Good example are my forum discussion with Amigong Dave. We took different opinions on a number of issues. We debated to the skin of our teeth. Afterwards, we have drinks of cold beer and videoke session when ever I was in Virac or Dave was in Manila.

We always want and expect the best... but do we do what is expected of us?
We want accurate data, but do we take time when asked to answer a survey or census?
we want to change the president and other govt officials, but do we exercise our right to vote? at this point nakapag register na ba tayo?
we are proud to be filipinos, but our passports says otherwise.

Filipino organizations around the world are always giving their donations to send to the flood victims. They are always doing that ever since as we have the fake president in the Philippines. As one of the OFW, I learned not to depend on the Governments, because they did nothing good for the country. People should find out independent organization involve in this activities and send the relief thru them.
What can we expect from our leaders? Nothing at all! Instead, earn something extra to give to the unfortunate brothers and sisters – that’s what you should be doing. What kind of leaders do we have? Heartless!
Let’s not wait for the government to take care of us. Let’s help our own by making them aware. We don’t have the capabilities of predicting Mother Nature. What we can do is to prevent self-risk to happen.
We have no control of natural calamities and people are seeking help from those who can help them in this kind of calamities.
People not only feel poor, they feel bloody helpless (homeless). I sympathize with the families, relatives and friends of the victims of this preventable disaster but this was an Act of God that could have been avoided.
We can only hope & pray!

Arroyo's Help to Ondoy's Victims
Ondoy's victims need more help not only food but accomodation to their weakened and over- fatigue bodies. Most of the children are getting sick because of exposure to cold and elements. Sanitation is a major problem at evacuation centers as it lacks the facilities for healthy environment. When will Arroyo be sincere in caring for the victims before a major outbreak of disease happens? If she can afford for major travels and have money to look for a presidential plane why can't she accomodate our suffering victims to even a cheap hotels and motels? These places can act immediately as temporary homes to the victims who have lost their homes.
BLAME GAME IS HERE AGAIN
Easier said than done.
Puro kantyaw puro pang basor! Can the nagging and blame game alleviate the suffering of Ondoy's victim. NO ! Not at all.
STOP THE BLAME GAME ! ! Its not a solution! Its agitation. Agitators who victimize hapless people victim again by taking advantage out of the victims hopelessness and frustration. Exploiting flood victims misery through agitation to advance political views is like a vulture in most vicious form.
What have we done to help in our own way?

Of course, responsible parties must be held accountable. Lessons must be learned. No question about it.
However, the blame game and nagging exercise is not looking for accountability, responsibility and lessons to be learned but clearly a cheap political propaganda.
This is not politics, this is human tragedy, there is nothing ROMANTIC about tragedy. Inda ko kun saen mo man na purot yung ideyang ROMANTIC about it. CALLOUS!
My family in Fairview were Ondoy's victim too having to suffer more than 10 hours in a rooftop without food, water and drenched in rain water. No government agencies nor personnel rescued them. They have to fend for themselves. I spent the whole day calling NDCC, QC Fire dept. QC police, MMDA asking to send rescue team but they too were victims. Do you think I find it romantic? Do I have to look for somebody to blame to seek justice and accountability.
Ondoy is not a plane crash, it is natures fury, acts of God.
Ok go ahead! conduct an investigation just like they do in a plane crash. Let me then know who are responsible and accountable so I can cut my share in their pound of flesh and draw pint of blood so to speak.

Government culpability to the victims of ondoy is on line and must answer to the disaster. We can't blame all to mother nature as what happened has contribution from this government. From early warning to evacuation the government is inutile for it lacks the nescessary equipments. Why we have this record flood? Government failed to build the needed infrastracture and actions to prevent flood from typhoons like Ondoy. From canals to esteros all are clogged. River banks and bends are narrowed. Did government seriously cleared and dredge all these systems to prevent flooding?
From proper urban planning government did not protect our people when they knew the risk to flooding of these subdivisions for these were former estuaries and runoffs. This is because of greed and corruption. What happened to Laguna de Bay and the sorrounding communities? From fishpens, reclamations and deforestations government have blind eyes. With all the dead and survivors crying. People should seek justice and let responsible people answer for their crimes. Why this disaster happened? How many lives were lost? How many properties and dreams were lost? Nobody would like to buy a property in a river bed and bend!! If people only know and if only government performed it's duty and enforce the law for a safe housing zone. Who developed and sold these subdivisions? Who certified and approved these subdivisions? These come around to government responsibility and law enforcement!!!
