Bananas grow abundantly in the island of Catanduanes. You find almost all household with bananas in the backyard apart from they are grown in the hills and mountains where they grow perennially.
One of the most loved variety is is "Latondan". It is sweet with softer texture. The peel is thinner and it is smaller than the banana found in the international market.
The island also grow the cooking banana variety we call "Kalibo" or in Tagalog "saba". This is similar to the cooking variety of the Island of Fiji, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Palau and the rest of the islands in the Pacific. This is cooked in many manners, boiled, fried (we call Banana Cue). I love it broiled over hot charcoal. Beautiful taste and flavor! Try it!
Come to Catanduanes and try our cooking tradition. Try our bananas.
